Interview with Peter Sutherland of BP & Goldman Sachs
Rosenberg, Mike
When Peter Sutherland addressed shareholders at BP’s Annual General Meeting in April 2009, he noted that during his 12 years as chairman, he had presided over a period of unprecedented transformation. Sutherland had planned to retire as chairman of BP in 2008, but the search for a successor has taken longer than anticipated, so he has stayed on. He reinforced BP’s commitment to being a leading provider of energy: “Energy means light, heat and transport. It is essential for prosperity and absolutely necessary for development. We should never allow our critics to detract from that essential purpose.” During a recent visit to IESE, Sutherland sat down with IESE’s Mike Rosenberg to discuss global strategy and the future of the energy industry.
Interview with Narayana Murthy of Infosys
Sieber, Sandra
Since co-founding Infosys Technologies in 1981, N.R. Narayana Murthy has overseen tremendous growth, first as CEO and now as non-executive chairman and “chief mentor” of the global IT services company based in Bangalore, India. Infosys ended fiscal 2008 with revenue topping $4 billion, and the first quarter of fiscal 2009 showed revenue of $1.15 billion, up 24.5 percent over the same period of the year before. Such phenomenal growth rates bring added pressures, not least the challenge of incorporating ever-increasing numbers of new employees. Since June 2006, Infosys has grown from 60,000 employees to 92,000, and at the time of this interview planned to recruit 25,000 more. To discuss these and other issues, IESE Prof. Sandra Sieber sat down with Narayana Murthy during a visit to IESE, where he also serves on the school’s International Advisory Board.
